Avert Your Eyes from the Static

By Julio Espin

While the world wages its wars
our hearts long for much more,
to feel like we’re not
giving in.
For far too long
we’ve been taught that
our eyes must look down,
make no contact,
and the slightest touch or gesture
that shows the least bit
of affection
must be avoided.
I say jerk the wheel
you’ve been sleeping at
and when sparks fly
you’ll be detached.
Now breathe the air
of a new day.
Your wall of static
is about to break
and amidst the panic
let us embrace.
