Crash Landing

By Julio Espin

These wings are wide,
enough to block out the sun.
But something is burning
and there’s nowhere we can run.
The blaze of red burns bright in the blue sky.
Like a phoenix that doesn’t plan to rise.
A sister of faith
sits across the way.
Amidst the tears and screams
she sits quietly and prays.
She seems so calm,
maybe even happy, too.
Maybe we’ll meet
when all of this is through.
And now this message
I’ll leave for you to hear.
Oh, how your love
shields me from my fear.
Please know that you’re
forever in my heart.
But now steel and earth collide,
and I’m afraid we must part.
